The Biology of Thinking (💥Every thought is a biological event)
You don’t just think with your brain. You think with your entire body.
The moment your brain interprets something as dangerous, exciting, embarrassing, or rewarding, it sends messages to your glands.
- Your hypothalamus, the brain’s command center, picks up the phone.
- It calls the pituitary gland.
- The pituitary calls the adrenal glands.
And just like that…
Your body receives a chemical memo: “Attention everyone! We have a situation!”- Your adrenal glands release adrenaline, making your heart beat faster, your breathing quicker, and your muscles ready for action.
- If your brain decides the “danger” isn’t over, your adrenal glands keep releasing cortisol, your main stress hormone. Cortisol is brilliant: It raises blood sugar for quick energy. Sharpens your attention.
Temporarily slows digestion. Even tells your immune system: “Hold that thought… we’ve got bigger things to deal with.”
Amazing… If you’re actually running from a tiger.
Not so amazing… If the “tiger” is an email you read three hours ago.
😃Here’s the fascinating part.
Your nervous system doesn’t distinguish very well between a real threat and one you vividly imagine.
Think about the same problem often enough…Your glands keep producing the same hormones.
Your cells become familiar with that chemical environment.
Some neuroscientists describe this as the body becoming accustomed to certain emotional states. It begins to expect the chemistry it experiences most often.Imagine your cells holding tiny coffee mugs every morning. “Good morning! Is today’s cortisol ready yet?” ☕😂 If not…
Your brain may helpfully generate another worrying thought just to keep the order consistent.🫣That’s why changing your life isn’t simply about positive thinking. 💥It’s about changing your biology.
When you slow your breathing. When you feel safe in the present moment. When you stop replaying yesterday’s movie… then:- Your hypothalamus receives a different message.
- The pituitary changes its instructions.
- The adrenal glands reduce cortisol production.
- Your parasympathetic nervous system takes the wheel.
- Oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine and endorphins begin to play a larger role.
Different thoughts. Different hormones. Different body.
The body you’ve been living in isn’t just a record of your age.
It’s a record of the chemicals you’ve practiced producing. The beautiful news?
Your biology is listening.
Every single thought is a vote.
Every calm breath is a new instruction.
Every moment of awareness tells your glands:
“Thank you… the tiger has left the building.” 🐅✨
