There’s More Than One Truth in Every Story
Here’s something worth remembering before we decide who’s right, who’s wrong, and who deserves the villain soundtrack. 🎻
There can be several “truths” living inside the same story. The 4 most common ones:1️⃣ The truth of the facts.
What actually happened. Actions. Words. Behaviors.
No excuses. No interpretations. No creative writing.2️⃣ The truth we believe.
Our version of what happened based on what we know.
And that version can be incomplete when we don’t have all the facts (and our creative minds gives a help), or simply mistaken when we add assumptions, interpretations, memory gaps, imagination, others’ perspective to the recipe, etc. This is probably most truths we hold in our memories: all poluted, right?3️⃣ The truth we want to believe.
This one is sneaky.
Our mind is remarkably talented at keeping the memories that support our story and quietly putting the inconvenient ones in the basement.4️⃣ The truth we make others believe.
Now we enter a different territory.
Sometimes people consciously edit the story to get support, validation, sympathy, control, or whatever outcome they’re after.
And yes, sometimes that editing includes good old-fashioned lies. The interesting part?
We rarely experience a story exactly as it happened. We experience it through the lens we were looking through.
So before saying, “I know exactly what happened,”
ask yourself: Do I know the facts… or do I know the story my mind built around them? And here’s the uncomfortable question:
What part of your story would change if you were brave enough to remove your assumptions, your expectations, other people’s opinions, and the version that makes you feel most justified?
Sit with that.✅️Because healing isn’t about discovering truths were fake news. It’s about having the courage to discover where we stopped looking for the truth and started protecting our story.
What if the truth you are defending is only one version of what happened? What if it’s only what you choose to believe?
And what might you finally see if you were willing to question? 👀
