Zen Teachings
Are We There for Life?
We are alive. Life is here for us, flowing through every breath, every moment. But the real question is: are we there for life?
Do we meet it fully, or do we drift along, distracted by thoughts, fears, and routines? In the Zen tradition, awakening often comes not from answers, but from deeply felt questions. Questions are used as mirrors. They reflect what we are avoiding, what we are missing, what we are.
Today, three Zen questions invite us to pause and awaken:
1. Who are you?
This question cuts to the heart of identity. Not your name, your job, or your roles, but the essence beneath them. Who is observing your thoughts, your emotions, your actions? Who is the silent witness to your life?2. Where are you?
It seems simple, but it’s profound. Not your physical location, but your presence in this moment. Are you fully here, or trapped in regrets of the past or anxieties about the future? Where are you in your life?3. What do you really want?
Beyond superficial desires, beyond “shoulds” and expectations, what is the deep calling of your heart?
What resonates with the core of your being?
Zen asks us to confront our true desire, not the distractions or illusions that keep us restless. These questions are not puzzles to solve. They are doors to open.
The more we sit with them, the more life itself becomes visible, and we begin to realize: perhaps being there for life is the greatest awakening of all.1:25
