How to Stay Zen in Life’s Never-Ending Soap Opera
Every day, our interactions with people put our inner world to the test.
And if life were a TV show, two character types would always steal the spotlight: the narcissists and the victims. Both are equally skilled at turning a peaceful day into a full-blown nightmare episode. One moment you’re glowing with joy, and the next 💥 bam!
A minor traffic spat, a family or friend’s “urgent” request (served with a dramatic victim monologue), a sharp word gift-wrapped from a loved one, or a single misplaced text… suddenly your sunny skies turn stormy.Triggers fire, old memories crawl out of the archives, fears wake up, and you’re back in survival mode » heart heavy, mind stuck replaying the same old drama reruns.
We all walk different paths, with different stories, so there’s no magic one-size-fits-all script.
But here’s one of my stories: with the drama queens and pain generators who starred in every single episode… until the big season finale last March.1️⃣ The Story
I grew up surrounded by narcissists: my mother and sister in the starring roles. Nothing I did was ever good enough. Criticism came in every flavor: words, looks, silence, even the eyebrow raise of doom.
So the moment I had a chance, I ran. First to another city, then another country, and eventually another continent. Looking back, I see it clearly: I was just searching for air I could finally breathe without choking on their toxicity.
Distance brought freedom, but not full immunity. Every phone call still landed like a heavy stone on my chest, and even the thought of them made my stomach twist.
2️⃣ The Shift
Last December, I stumbled into Aaron Doughty’s world. His videos, his courses, his guidance were the “kick-off” on my leveling up. That’s when things flipped. I realized the sneaky truth: the problem wasn’t “out there” anymore. The only place left to heal was inside me.
So, I just did the work: inner child healing, shadow work, Ho’oponopono, daily meditations on gratitude, raising my vibration, and connecting to my higher self. Breathwork every other week.
And slowly but surely, I could feel the tiny sparks of positive change, both inside me and all around me.
2 months later, the shift was undeniable and seemed complete for this game level.- Painful memories lost their sting.
They turned into old VHS tapes: still there, but playing with no emotional soundtrack. My heart felt feather-light.
- Even better, my whole life upgraded.
Relationships with my kids, colleagues, and friends started flowing with more peace, more joy, and finally a nervous system that wasn’t on high alert 24/7.
3️⃣ The Grand Finale
Then the Universe, with its signature sense of humor, sent me a “graduation ceremony”: a ticket to Brazil in March, face -to-face with my mom and sister. The final exam. The big showdown. The moment I’d discover what my heart was really vibing on.
Here’s the twist: when I met them, it was like meeting two completely new people.
My heart brought no baggage. No grudges. No history. Just presence.
It welcomed them as if it were the very first time.We spent a month together filled with love, laughter, and conversations I once thought impossible. For the first time in my life, my mother said she loves me. And my sister? She cracked open her heart and shared her feelings and stories with me.
4️⃣ The Lesson
Simple, but life-changing: all the real work happens within. Period.
- The only thing we truly have the power to change is ourselves.
- We can’t rewrite others, only our own script.
- The world shifts only when we do.
- The only real change starts within.
- Painful memories lost their sting.
