Why does humankind feel the need to follow?

Why do we create gods and call them Lord or Father?

This impulse is not random: it is woven into both our history and our biology.

      🔹 History
From the earliest tribes, survival depended on unity.
Following a leader meant shared protection, food, and wisdom. Archaeological evidence from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece shows how gods were often modeled after rulers or fathers: authority figures who represented order in a chaotic world. Kings were seen as divine, and gods were imagined as patriarchs ruling families of humanity. It was easier to survive, and to make sense of the unknown, when we believed someone greater was watching over us.

      🔹 Psychology
On a psychological level, this mirrors our inner child’s need for care. As children, our very survival depended on a caregiver’s guidance and protection. When that care was absent or inconsistent, the longing for a “perfect parent” often got projected onto the divine. In religious terms, this becomes God the Father, the Lord, the Protector. Even outside of religion, we see the same drive in how people idolize celebrities, political figures, or charismatic leaders: our psyche is wired to seek guidance and belonging.

      🔹 Neuroscience
Modern neuroscience backs this up. Studies on the brain show that our reward circuits light up when we feel part of a group, releasing oxytocin (the bonding hormone) and dopamine (the motivation and pleasure chemical).
Following a leader or believing in a higher power reduces uncertainty, which lowers cortisol (stress hormone) and brings a sense of safety. The human brain is literally designed to prefer order over chaos, even if that order comes from imagined or symbolic figures.

👉So where does this come from?
It comes from millions of years of evolution, from our longing to belong, from our brain’s wiring for safety, and from our heart’s need to feel loved and guided.

The need to follow is not weakness, it’s deeply human.
But as consciousness evolves, so does our responsibility: to honor the need for guidance without losing our inner authority. To recognize that the same qualities we once projected onto gods and leaders (strength, love, wisdom) are alive and available within us.

✨ We should stop worshipping outside ourselves and start embodying what we honor within.
This is moving from survival to creation mode!
