I’ve been hiding for a long time. I used to think that meant wearing sunglasses when I wasn’t wearing makeup. I started taking my sunglasses off and thought that was how I was going to step out into the world. All it really did was show people, who didn’t care anyway, my naked eyes.

I’ve done years of healing work to uncover this need to hide (among many, many other things) resulting from an insecure, often terrifying childhood. Little Julie feels unsafe. It wasn’t until my session with J.D. Radewan that the full truth came out. My truth.

When he asked me about this need to hide, I blamed it on another aesthetic—my weight. It didn’t feel true when I said it, at least not the WHOLE truth. After the session, insights continued to come up, and I realized that, while I might’ve wanted to hide physically from other people for plenty of reasons, I was actually hiding my truth from myself.

I’ve hid who I really am and what I really need and how I really feel because I don’t want to hurt anyone, I’m afraid of “shaking things up,” I don’t think I will be accepted, and I’m sure other people will think that my truth is wrong. So I hide. Almost all the time.

The best way I can describe my session with J.D.—and this doesn’t do it justice, by any means—is that it’s like having a Reiki session from the inside. An internal scan from the top, down, revealing who I am with no judgment, total openness, acceptance, curiosity, and even appreciation. It was my soul being fully SEEN by another human.

I cried through most of it. Tears of surprise, joy, heartbreak.
