Why do strangers get our best… while our people get whatever is left?

      Think about it.
A stranger bumps into us on the street: “Sorry! 😊 No worries!”
A coworker makes a mistake: “No problem, we all have bad days.”
An occasional friend cancels: “Totally understand! ❤️”
Then our partner forgets one tiny thing: “ARE YOU SERIOUS?! HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU?”

      Our coworker gets our patience.
      Our partner gets the courtroom.
      The stranger gets our smile.
Our family gets the eye roll.
The occasional friend gets our enthusiastic attention.
Our real friend gets: “Sorry, I’ve been meaning to reply for three weeks.”

We dress nicely for people we barely know.
We choose our words carefully with people we barely trust.
We show up energized for people we see occasionally.
And somehow the people who know us best often receive the version of us that has run out of battery. 🔋

      Why?
      Because familiarity creates safety.
We don’t have to impress the people who already love us.
We don’t have to monitor every word.
      We trust they’ll understand.
      And that safety is precious.

But sometimes, without noticing, comfort becomes carelessness.
We start giving our best manners to strangers and our worst moods to the people who feel safest.
We become incredibly polite outside the house …and apparently reserve our most advanced emotional vocabulary for: “Fine.” “Whatever.” “Nothing.”

Maybe the invitation isn’t to become fake or constantly “perform” for the people we love.
      It’s to become intentional.

Our family doesn’t deserve only what remains after the world has had its share.
Our closest friends shouldn’t have to receive us only when we’re rested, regulated and in a good mood.
They deserve our realness and our consideration.
      Our honesty and our kindness.
Our tired days and our effort.
Because the people who stay through our ordinary Tuesdays, our weird moods, our growing pains and our unfinished versions… are not less deserving of our best because they love us.
They may actually be the people most deserving of it.

      So today, try something tiny:
Give someone you love the same patience you gave a stranger.
The same smile you gave a coworker.
The same curiosity you gave an occasional friend.
Put down the phone. Listen a little longer. Say thank you. Make the good coffee. Use the nice towel.
Because love shouldn’t mean: “You get whatever is left of me.”
It can mean: “You get the real me… and I still choose to show up with care and gratitude.” ❤️

      • Sadly, this is SO true!!

I do think that this changes and evolves over the years, and that loved ones often get the best version of us over time. Not time spent by simply existing on this planet, but by time measured through spiritual growth; by walking this spiritual path (not just by contemplating or observing it).

Thank you for another fantastic post, Katia!🙏

        Namaste, my dear soul sis.♥️
