Are you the “black sheep” of the family?
If so, fascinating creature: this post is for you.
You are usually the one who asks inconvenient questions at perfectly inconvenient times.
“Why do we do this?”
“Does this actually make sense?”
“Are we all pretending this is normal?”
And suddenly, Christmas dinner gets interesting. 😂The black sheep is often the family member who doesn’t quite fit the family’s unwritten rulebook. They may choose a different career, relationship, lifestyle, beliefs, boundaries, or simply refuse to participate in the same old dramas.
And here’s the funny part: The family may call them difficult, rebellious, selfish, too sensitive, too independent, or the classic… “They’ve changed.”
Yes. That is occasionally the entire point.
Because families have systems. Every family develops roles, expectations, alliances, silences, traditions, and very creative ways of avoiding uncomfortable truths. Then one person starts questioning the script. That person can feel like a walking fire alarm in a house where everyone agreed not to discuss the smoke. 🔥
You: “Could we maybe look at this?”
Them: “WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS MAKING THINGS DIFFICULT?”The black sheep isn’t necessarily the wisest person in the family.
They can be messy, wrong, dramatic, stubborn, and occasionally spectacularly annoying.
But often, they are the one who becomes willing to ask: “What if this way of doing things isn’t actually working anymore?”Their job isn’t to fix the family. It’s simply to stop carrying what was never theirs.
They don’t necessarily break the family.
They break the agreement to pretend.
And perhaps that is why they can feel so threatening.
Because when one person changes the pattern, everyone else suddenly gets a choice:
Keep repeating it… or question it too.The black sheep may spend years wondering, “Why don’t I fit in?”
Until one day they realize: Maybe I wasn’t born to fit into the pattern. Maybe I was born to notice it.
And then, hopefully, they stop trying to turn themselves white just to make the family flock comfortable. 🐑🖤Because belonging is beautiful.
But belonging at the cost of yourself is just very expensive loneliness.Victoria1 Comment-
